The Internet age has revolutionized how we access and share information by accelerating and simplifying message transmission. In this fast-paced flow of information, there is a growing need for a new type of “literacy” skill to filter useful information from the mass of messages and apply it effectively. With the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years, this need has become even more pronounced. To survive and succeed in the complexity of the digital age, we require a new set of knowledge and skills known as AI literacy.

The Role of AI in Our Lives

AI is the capability of machines to exhibit human-like intelligence. It includes sub-disciplines such as machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). Machine Learning (ML) is a branch of AI that enables computers to learn from data and improve their performance through experience. On the other hand, Deep Learning (DL) is a sub-branch of ML that performs more complex data analyses and predictions using multilayered artificial neural networks. In daily life, these technologies are utilized across all sectors in the industrial field. AI is employed in applications such as search engines, social media algorithms, smart assistants (Alexa, Siri), and recommendation systems (Netflix, Spotify).

Examples of AI in everyday life include tracking a bus via an app while waiting at a bus stop or seeing an Instagram ad reach users. Furthermore, AI-based solutions are used in sectors such as marketing campaign measurement and analysis, production, healthcare, finance, and retail. AI improves processes through automation and data analysis, and it is involved in the storage and distribution of cold chain products, among many other applications. In essence, AI surrounds our lives, from the products we use to the programs we rely on, advertisements, and applications.

What is AI Literacy?

In a world where digitalization is accelerating and AI is revolutionizing many sectors, AI literacy involves understanding how technology works and developing awareness on how to use it ethically, securely, and efficiently. Understanding the operation, potential, and limitations of AI has become a critical skill not only for technology professionals but for every individual.

"AI literacy" is a set of knowledge and skills that enables individuals to critically understand, use, and evaluate AI systems and tools in a secure and ethical manner. This is a skill that can be developed and updated. The ability to understand, assess, and use AI technologies has become somewhat of a necessity in today's rapidly digitalizing world where AI applications are widespread. Therefore, understanding AI concepts, grasping recent developments and applications, and effectively using AI skills are seen as essential for the current era.

Understanding AI Literacy from an Ethical and Societal Perspective

Whether in professional or daily life, understanding fundamental aspects of AI is crucial. What is AI, what are its limitations and capabilities, what developments and potential outcomes can we expect soon? Which AI technology can be used in which job, and how? These questions might initially seem relevant only to students, teachers, educators, or field workers. However, acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to understand, use, and evaluate AI is fundamental and important for everyone, regardless of their profession, in both work and daily life.

One of AI's most fundamental features is its use of large datasets. The processing, storage, and interpretation of big data raise concerns about data privacy and security. Issues such as data leaks and privacy breaches can arise. AI algorithms are trained on datasets, which means they can carry human biases and learnings. The use of biased datasets for training AI algorithms can lead to biased decisions and injustices, making fairness a major ethical concern. Additionally, when new developments in AI are announced, concerns about their impact on the workforce often come to mind. While AI automation might eliminate some jobs, experts argue that it can also create new job opportunities and lead to changes in job descriptions and requirements. This situation necessitates the reskilling of the workforce, highlighting the importance of adapting professions and workforce potential to AI advancements and developing AI literacy skills.

How to Develop AI Literacy

Learning basic information about how AI works, the algorithms used, and how these algorithms are developed lays a foundational understanding for AI literacy. Gaining technical knowledge about the operation of algorithms and models, learning AI tools, keeping up with innovations, and accessing educational resources strengthen this foundation. For this, one can explore AI development tools and platforms such as TensorFlow and PyTorch. Online courses and educational materials on platforms like Coursera, edX, and Udacity are valuable resources. Reading foundational books like "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" by Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig, participating in podcasts, online publications, or webinars with AI experts can facilitate in-depth knowledge of AI.

While developing AI literacy skills, it is also important to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This includes the ability to critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of AI solutions. Individuals can develop the capability to design AI solutions for real-world problems based on their goals and topics of interest. This helps in making progress in developing AI-based solutions to problems.

What Does AI Literacy Provide?

AI literacy has become a vital skill for adapting to the requirements of the digital age. Learning fundamental concepts, gaining practical experience, advancing in the professional field, keeping up with current developments, and understanding the ethical dimensions of AI are key steps in acquiring this skill. By gaining proficiency in AI, we can make significant strides in both personal and professional lives and be better prepared for the technological world of the future.

AI literacy also enables individuals to evaluate AI technologies with a conscious and critical perspective and use their potential effectively. This can have a broad impact ranging from personal development to societal transformation. AI literacy is a critical skill for both individuals and organizations in today’s digital world. In an environment where technology is rapidly advancing and becoming widespread, AI literacy helps individuals and societies adapt to changes, seize opportunities, and tackle challenges. This competency helps to enhance the benefits of AI and mitigate potential disadvantages and challenges.
