In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) technologies are rapidly advancing, mastering the skill of writing effective and accurate prompts is becoming increasingly important. Soon, we may move beyond using these technologies for tasks that would have taken a long time, leveraging them in ways that elevate AI to a new level. We might become merely dreamers and selectors of the dreams we wish to articulate, with AI assistants handling the rest. Only time will tell. For now, developing effective prompt-writing skills to manage one or multiple AI models is a crucial and necessary capability of our time. Here’s a guide to help you with this skill.

Writing Prompts for AI

Crafting effective prompts for an AI model plays a crucial role in obtaining the desired responses for your tasks. In the realm of NLP models, the inputs provided are referred to as "prompts," and experts who handle these inputs are known as "prompt engineers."

To effectively communicate with various AI models (e.g., ChatGPT, DALL-E, etc.), you need to understand the techniques for prompt writing. Experts indicate that there is no universally optimal way to write prompts and that there are many suboptimal alternatives. Therefore, gaining some practice in prompt writing is important. Experimenting with different prompts and combining them is a recommended approach.

Understanding the Language of AI Models

Recent advancements in generative AI have been quite astonishing and have captured global attention. However, achieving consistent results or making effective use of large language models like GPT and Codex by simply inputting a prompt is not always straightforward.

Large language models have the capacity to interpret complex information across text, audio, and video modalities. They can transform this information into clear, simple, and consistent summaries, or provide detailed and academic insights on complex topics. To fully leverage the potential of AI, you need to develop the skill of using prompts correctly, which involves understanding the "language" of the AI model.

Remember that you are interacting with a software program. Your questions should be clear, precise, and free of ambiguity. Ground your guidance in a contextual foundation. Provide enough context for the AI model to better understand the topic you are discussing, and include the necessary details. Clear details provide more "customized" guidance. Therefore, specifying more details according to the type of response you want helps you manage and direct the topic effectively.

Tips for Writing Prompts

You don’t need to give all the detailed information to the AI at once. Sometimes, developing each step of the thought process gradually, like in steps, can be beneficial. Adding explanations to each prompt can sometimes provide more logical and useful progress. AI, mimicking human reasoning, can be prone to unsupported logical leaps leading to nonsensical results. When describing details, if the topic is complex, you can guide by providing examples and connecting each step to the previous one.

For technical support, you can request specific assistance, such as: “Can you write a ‘for’ loop example in Python?” or “Could you write code to perform the following task?” Sometimes, describing the problem first and then clarifying the issue in a second part can be effective: “I have a question about writing a loop in Python; could you provide information on this, specifically about…”

For open-ended questions, establish simple and clear templates for querying. For example, "Can you provide information about Greek islands?" followed by "Could you list the top five most well-known islands and explain how local living conditions on these islands compare to others?" This method helps to gradually expand and develop the topic, which is useful in situations requiring human-like reasoning.

Detailed Prompts for Customized Tasks

A detailed prompt leads to a more customized result. For instance, you might write, “Could you describe Agnes Varda’s cinema in the context of French New Wave cinema?” or “Could you provide information on the portrayal of women in Varda’s cinema, especially in examples where women’s stories are prominent?”

When developing a story, include details about the genre, the atmosphere, character development, or other relevant details in your prompts. For example, instead of “Write a sketch set in Turkey,” you might say, “Write a sketch set in Turkey, narrated in a style similar to Sunay Akın, focusing on a family drama about domestic violence in a lower-class family, where one character is an alien and the others eventually move to Japan.”

Optimizing Prompts with Different AI Models

Writing prompts for language models (e.g., ChatGPT) differs from writing prompts for visual models (e.g., DALL-E) and other AI models with specific needs. If you’re working with a visual creation program and need help describing your design, start with a language model to draft the prompt and then use it in the primary program. This creates a “prompt bridge” between different AI tools.

You can refine your prompts by providing detailed descriptions: “I’m preparing an English visual design prompt for a program. The draft in Turkish is: ‘I want an image of a surreal party scene in a medieval, fantastical, and gothic setting. The background characters should be blurred, while four main characters, who should be human-like aliens with distinct facial features, should be prominent in the foreground… Can you help me convert this into a prompt suitable for… application?’” These examples can vary, being either shorter or more detailed. Effective prompts are clear, specific, detailed, and contextually grounded.

Developing Prompt Writing Skills

To write effective prompts, it’s essential to clearly define your objectives and understand the limitations and capabilities of the model you are using. AI models are often trained on specific datasets, which may make them more proficient or limited in certain areas. To achieve a particular outcome, you need to precisely define what the model should do. This can involve customized, open-ended, or example-based prompts. A good prompt should also be free of unnecessary information and focused, making it easier to obtain the responses you seek. By applying the tips and examples discussed here, you can develop your own prompt-writing style, a skill that improves with practice and staying updated with advancements.
