Cloud computing, a global network that allows us to share information, data and applications over the Internet, saves companies the cost of installing various hardware solutions.

The term cloud computing is also used to describe the technology that makes cloud computing work. This includes servers, networking, operating system software and virtualized IT infrastructure.

We have prepared some basic statistics for you about this very fast, secure and efficient cloud computing.

1. By 2025, more than 100 zettabytes of data will be stored in the cloud.

This statistic tells us a lot about the rise of cloud computing. For a full understanding of the event, a zettabyte, a billion terabytes and a trillion gigabytes will be sufficient. This is also a quite astonishing amount. The volume of globally stored data is set to reach 200 zettabytes by 2025. This means that half of the total data globally will be in the cloud. For comparison, it will be enough to remind you that in 2015, 25 per cent of computing data was in the cloud.

2. Amazon Web Services, or AWS, has 33 per cent of the cloud infrastructure market share.

Amazon Web Services, one of the largest cloud computing companies, provided Amazon with $ 4.88 billion in operating revenue in 2020. The value of this giant's cloud computing revenues increased 39 per cent in the same year. After AWS, Azure has the largest market share in cloud infrastructure services with 20 per cent, while Google has 10 per cent.

3. For 70 per cent of European organisations, migrating workloads to the cloud is the top initiative.

According to cloud migration statistics, it is the number one initiative on the agenda of European organizations that have not yet moved their operations to the cloud. The next steps are optimizing existing cloud use to reduce costs (59 percent) and supporting a cloud-first strategy (50 percent).

4. Eighty-nine per cent of enterprises have a multi-cloud strategy.

In 2021, when trends were moving towards adopting multi- and hybrid cloud strategies, one of the main driving forces behind it was the pandemic that forced the need for higher cloud utilization. While this was a significant need back then, now most organizations are planning to move towards a multi-cloud strategy. Also, according to cloud cost-saving statistics, 80 per cent are aiming to adopt a hybrid cloud strategy.

5. The average cloud computing price is about $400 per server per month.

Although the average cost of cloud computing depends on different factors, typically the price per server ranges from $400 to $15,000. Moreover, according to cloud computing usage statistics, the latter usually comes with a full back-office infrastructure.

6. Compared to running an in-house system, cloud computing is up to 40 times more cost-effective for small and medium-sized businesses.

Cloud computing is a much better option for SMEs. In addition, 94 per cent of these companies have found security in cloud solutions, which in most cases is not available in their on-premises infrastructure.

7. Google Drive is recognized as the most used cloud storage worldwide with 94.44 per cent.

Google Drive seems to dominate the global cloud storage market with the number of users. Cloud computing statistics show that Dropbox is next on the list with 66.2 per cent. OneDrive is third with 39.35 per cent, followed by iCloud with 38.89 per cent. Some of the lesser-known services include MEGA (5.09 per cent), Box (4.17 per cent) and pCloud (1.39 per cent).

8. 71 per cent of cloud storage users keep their photos in the cloud.

As the use of cloud computing grows, people are finding different uses for it. After photos, just over half of users back up important data to the cloud, 41 per cent store music and videos there, and 35 per cent keep office documents in their storage. Finally, according to cloud computing statistics, 27 per cent store passwords and 18 per cent store financial data there.

9. 48 per cent of corporate data is in the cloud.

The amount of data stored in the cloud is steadily increasing, but many security issues remain unresolved. For example, only 32 per cent of organizations feel it is their responsibility to protect data. This is because it can cause serious problems, especially if a data breach occurs. According to cloud computing statistics, 35 per cent of organizations believe that this should be the responsibility of cloud solution providers, while 23 per cent consider it a very important factor when choosing their provider.

10. In cloud computing, many native applications have reached 50 per cent in production.

Typically, applications are tuned to be compatible with the cloud environment, but recently many applications are coming directly from the cloud. These are cloud-native applications that run on their infrastructure without being installed on an operating system or server. Building applications like this allows companies to scale quickly and dynamically. For this reason, many of these applications are reaching high levels of production use.

11. 77 per cent of IT leaders aim to use open-source code more often

Statistics show that there are many reasons behind the decision to opt for migration to the public cloud. Open-source applications use source code that is easily accessible for review and editing. Cloud solutions built with this code have easy deployment elements across all cloud environments. All these features provide better data transferability and interoperability.

12. The average employee actively uses 36 different file sharing tools in cloud computing at work.

There is no need to say anything more about cloud adoption trends than the fact that the average company can use 210 different collaboration cloud services. Similarly, the average employee accesses 36 different file sharing tools, content sharing services and collaboration tools. Collaboration is among the number one application of cloud computing in the enterprise.

13. 71 percent of organizations want speed improvements in cloud computing.

There are many reasons why companies turn to the cloud. The most important of these is, without a doubt, speed improvement. More flexibility (63 per cent) and improved customer support (57 per cent) are next. Typically, organizations with more than 1000 employees are looking for flexibility and lower costs, while smaller organizations are looking for business continuity.

14. The SaaS market size in 2022, short for Software as a Service, is the highest among all cloud computing segments with $177 billion in revenue.

The growth of cloud computing is found in all segments (platform, infrastructure, and software). Software as a Service (SaaS) is currently the highest revenue generator. Following this, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) comes in with a market size of $120 billion. Finally, the global Platform as a Service (PaaS) market size is $110 billion in 2022.

15. Security is the most common issue in cloud computing with 83 per cent.

Following the adoption of the cloud system, concerns about some aspects have also emerged. Security is the most important issue for organizations. Spending on security (82 per cent), followed by management (79 per cent). For reference, business owners claim that about 30 per cent of the cloud budget is wasted.

16. Cloud hacking poses the biggest threat to cloud adoption at 45 per cent.

Statistics on cloud computing show that hacking occurs when cybercriminals steal a user's account credentials. This is what businesses fear the most when it comes to cloud issues. For hackers, there are different ways for attackers to carry out compromise, from direct attack to guessing passwords.

17. 52 percent of organizations want cloud solutions with security tools.

According to cloud computing security statistics, clouds with integrated security tools are the number one choice for most businesses. This should come as no surprise, as security is the number one concern for cloud adopters.

18. 80 per cent of employees use SaaS applications at work without IT approval.

Some of the biggest threats to a company's security lie in employees' preference for external services to access internal files and data. Most employees never seek approval from the IT department to use these applications, while 83 per cent of IT professionals claim that employees store data on unapproved cloud services.

19. In 88 per cent of cases, human error is the cause of a cloud data breach.

Although hackers try to exploit the weaknesses of the IT infrastructure, more often, the main 'culprit' is seen as employee mistakes. In most cases, cloud providers are not responsible for the leak. One of the common ways to trick employees into releasing malicious content into the cloud is phishing. Cloud computing growth statistics show that men fall for these scams twice as often as women (17 per cent compared to 34 per cent).
